Tā moko is a collaborative process; each piece is bespoke, designed to reflect the wearer’s unique whakapapa (genealogy), history and milestones. Read more about our moko process below.

Moko kanohi process, 2025.

Our process:

  1. Once we receive your email, indicating where you’re from and details including size and placement, we’ll be able to give you an accurate quote and book you in for the required amount of time. A consultation via google meet can be requested to discuss your project in detail. Once booked in, you will receive our studio address with information about where to park and what to bring on the day of your appointment.

  2. Traditional, kōwhaiwhai based moko is drawn directly onto the skin. Once you’ve arrived, we offer a kapu tī or coffee to settle you in to our space. Following a kanohi ki te kanohi (face to face) kōrero where we discuss your whakapapa, life’s story and what you want your moko to represent, patterns are selected and drawn on in pen.

  3. Once drawn on, the application process opens with a karakia. We take breaks throughout the session as needed.

  4. Once your moko is complete, the session is closed with a karakia whakamutunga and aftercare instructions are given so the healing process goes smoothly and without issue.
